We've constructed a whole storyline taking quite a bit of lore from the Green Lantern Animated Series, compressing it into a single sector of our galaxy, and using that story as a model to create space for our version of Atrocitus. This actually gives us room to also adapt a few beloved characters from the show. They've both appeared in the comics, so they are totally fair game (not that that is necessarily a requirement, but it's a nice bar to clear)
Razer is an interesting character to include because despite only having a handfull of comic appearances his personal story is unusually stable because it's been established in MULTIPLE adaptations. You just don't usually see that. It makes him a surprisingly vital character to try to adapt.

Razer's Animation HistoryLike Aya, Razer has appeared in a few comics, but they are really just there to introduce him. If his role in actual Green Lantern mythology has been expanded on at all ,it's escaped me. This means we can zero in on his animation history, which actually has a cool surprise in it.
Razer was a main character in the Green Lantern Animated Series. He was a Red Lantern who was captured by Hal and company. Over the course of the show, we learn about the tragedy that led to him becoming a Red Lantern; his wife was killed when his peaceful colony was attacked, and his rage summoned his ring. His arc as he develops a found family across the show is a major driving element of its overall plot. He transitions from an angry villain to an honorable, sarcastic, deeply conflicted ally. So Zuko, essentially. Years after the series ended, Razer actually appeared in an entirely different animated series. Young Justice actually continued his personal story, depicting him as wearing both a red AND a blue ring, fighting to maintain balance. He was traveling the cosmos looking for Aya after her sacrifice at the end of the first series. |
Our Razer StoryThe main thing we have to establish for our version of Razer to work is exactly what is happening to him. We're not using the Red Lanterns; we don't want to introduce whole other spectrums of Lanterns and diminish the specialness of the main Corps. instead, Atrocitus's blood itself is powered by Anti-Oan energy. He can infect people with it, making them spawns, or he can actually empower someone with rage-blood of their own, making them Bloodstars; effectively what would normally be the full equivalent of a Red Lantern. The Bloodstars are effectively powerful space vampires, but eventually the power will immolate them. Razer is NOT a Bloodstar... because we want him to live. He's a Bloodspawn. Not as powerful as a full Bloodstar, but we don't actually need him to be. We need him to be fighting Atrocitus's influence and the influence of his own blood, struggling with his rage as it manifests as a physical thing. The show manages to express this over the course of the entire series, so there is quite a bit of story implied in that period.
He also participates in a second story, where he, Saint Walker, Aya, and Jack T Chance all venture into Atrocitus's domain in an attempt to finally stop him. Whenever I make a story like this that's meant to parallel something from elsewhere in pop culture, I like to leave it for you to figure out on your own, so let me know if you've worked this one out. Finally, the bond between Razer and Aya is more subtle here, I hope... less of a giant tragic epic and more a setup for what comes next. |
