One of the changes we've made in our timeline is a larger story featuring the forbidden Sector 666, where our take on Atrocitus lets us set him up as a space vampire and tell a bunch of vampire-themed stories with him. One of the stories we were telling was coming together specifically because of the particular collection of characters involved, but to really tell it correctly, we needed to add a pirate. Lo and behold, classic Green Lantern lore happened to have the perfect character waiting for us.
Jack T Chance's StoryJack T Chance comes from the very first issue of one of my favorite Green Lantern series of all time, Green Lantern Corps Quarterly. It was an anthology series where each issue gave us all sorts of completely unique Green Lantern stories, illustrating just how fantastically weird this corner of the DC universe can be. Jack was a gunslinger from a backwater planet called Garnet, although its residents called it Hellhole. When the local Green Lantern is killed, Jack gets chosen and promptly overrides the ring's no-kill rule (which actually was introduced in this story) by drawing his own pistol. Brought before the Guardians, he basically tells them that all the normal Lanterns trying to police the sector have failed, that to defeat the criminals of Hellhole you need a man as bad and brutal as the criminal element, and that the ring itself clearly thinks so since it chose him. The end result is that Jack was the only Green Lantern authorized to use deadly force (only on his own planet).
We aren't making Jack a Green Lantern, or even a gunslinger really... we were telling a particular story that happened to need a spaceborn pirate analog, and Jack simply popped out as the obvious solution. Still, it is an absolute pleasure to be able to adapt this fantastically of-his-era character and get to show you exactly how crazy and unpredictable the Green Lantern lore can be it you stop putting it in a box. |
