Bleez
39 years ago - Bleez is born on the planet Havania, the daughter of wealthy elite Lord Rocco & Lady Bluuz.
22 years ago - 17-year-old Bleez, tired of rejecting suitors for her hand in marriage, escapes from her family's land, traveling the galaxy with her inheritance.
20 years ago - 19-year-old Bleez's ship is taken by slavers, and she is taken as a hostage. Traveling in Sector 666, she is rescued by Atrocitus's Bloodstars. She joins the acolytes of Atrocitus.
10 years ago - 29-year-old Bleez becomes one of Atrocitus's elite Bloodstars, taking to the powers of her Anti-Oan blood far stronger than any other acolyte before her.
7 years ago - 32-year-old Bleez confronts the Green Lanterns infiltrating Sector 666. She almost seduces Hal Jordan before she is revealed to be a Bloodstar, requiring all three of the lanterns to stop her from killing him.
5 years ago - 34-year-old Bleez attempts to stop Bro'Dee Walker, Aya, Razer & Jack T Chance from infiltrating Ryut. During the battle she grows bone wings, a previously unknown effect of her Anti-Oan blood, before she is defeated. Having failed to protect Atrocitus, she exiles herself from Sector 666.
now - 39-year-old Bleez, surviving far longer than all other Bloodstars and living in agony, she begins to create blood spawn of her own, building her Empire of Tears as she takes over whole systems, making her way to Earth with thousands of vampiric followers. Kyle Rayner & John Stewart hold back the invasion, fighting Bleez as her body mutates into a giant spaceborn vampiric dragon. When she is killed, all the still-living blood spawn are returned to normal, other than a single Earth cat.
As we build a whole new lore around our Space Vampire take on Atrocitus's Red Lanterns, multiple opportunities to create deliberate homages to some of our favorite vampire fiction. Bleez gives us a chance to do one more, taking advantage of her overt sexuality and dangerous monster-from-space profile. I get too much of a kick out of only hinting about this sort of thing to tell you what we're adapting, but if you think you know it, be sure to message us your guess!
Bleez's StoryBleez appeared for the first time in a one-shot book called Final Crisis: Rise of the Red Lanterns, which takes place somewhere amidst the Final Crisis series and depicts the birth of the Red Lantern Corps. From among the whole Corps she actually gets a little more description of her backstory, but what they describe isn't really the sort of thing I want to repeat here, so we can just allow that it was a lot. She appears along with the rest of the crowds of Emotional Spectrum Lanterns across a lot of John's Green Lantern stories of the era, and even represented the Red Lanterns in the New 52 series the New Guardians, effectively making her very likely the highest-profile Red Lantern besides Atrocitus himself.
In our timeline, we are adapting the idea of Atrocitus and his Red Lanterns into a regime of space vampires. His followers that have been fully corrupted by his blood are called Bloodstars, and we've made Bleez one of the most powerful. It's a pretty natural change; Bleez's design is so vampire-forward it kind of seems like this should have been the idea the whole time. We're using her specifically in order to tell one more classic vampire story with our Space Vampires. Bleez will be by far the longest-surviving Bloodstar, and with her impending immolation she eventually evolves the ability to create bloodspawn herself. Her campaign of destruction becomes the subject of one final confrontation with the Green Lanterns, giving us a rare opportunity to have Kyle and John work together. |
