Vera Black was created as the new leader of the Elite when it was transitioning from an unchecked group of rogue superheroes into something more controlled in the pages of Justice League Elite. The intention was that the new group functioned as a black-ops version of the Justice League. This wasn't really a NEW idea, there have been a lot of books meant to feature a more hands-on, proactive version of the League. The concept was probably the most successful as the Outsiders, which is why it's still considered one of the main teams in the DC universe.
Vera was a utilitarian, but pretty well designed character. Her older brother Manchester had been the leader of the Elite, and represented the sort of punk rock hooligan anarchy that fueled the team's objective. He had unchecked psychic powers, something that gave made him seem completely unchecked and unpredictable. Vera, in comparison, was a former black-ops agent of British Intelligence. She clearly had a respect for the rebellious ways of her brother, but she also had a career as a secret agent that gave her a perspective in how the world worked that her brother lacked. Instead of being a violently powerful telepathy, she was a cyborg with a seemingly limitless array of weapons and tools built into her arms. It was just as chaotic a power, but because it came from a place of science it also seemed to give her a more stable groundwork. He codename "Sister Superior" isn't just clever wordplay. |
As we craft our new version of what the Elite become, This character actually becomes an ideal character to drive that team. She has an awareness and appreciation of the power and authority a person with powers has, but she also has the necessary awareness to mold that sort of energy into something positive.
Our new story of the Elite features Vera taking control of Manchester's inter-dimensional ship in order to stop him. In doing so, she makes herself a target of the ship's original masters, the Daemonites, and is then guided by Her new ally, Tomorrow Woman, to assemble a new team that can assist her in defending the planet from their unseen invaders. In doing so, we essentially craft an entirely new team that keeps the spirit of Wildstorm alive. |
