The Teen Titans really are the lifeblood of DC comics. The Justice League might have all the marquee names with their faces on billboards, but a quick glance at the history of the company will show that the Titans are the team that really matters. They set the tone for the entire line. When the Titans are performing well, DC is performing well. These characters are always and will always be central to DC's success.
The Teen Titan's Comic HistoryThe Teen Titans first appeared in Brave & The Bold #54 in 1964. It was a deliberate attempt to reach a more youthful audience, appearing in back up stories and regularly referencing contemporary pop culture like Bob Dylan and the Beatles before eventually getting their own title. There were stories that involved socially relevant issues like inner city racism & the vietnam war, and it was a moderate success before it was eventually canceled.
The New Teen Titans debuted in 1980, a book by Marv Wolfman & George Perez. The book starred a few established characters from the original team as well as introducing several new members. This book struck the market right alongside the legendary John Byrne / Chris Claremont X-Men, and both books tapped into a storytelling style full of dynamic characters and intrigue that the industry really hasn't ever seen again. Over the years other creators came onto the book and the quality waxed and waned as it tends to do, but it left a lasting legacy that DC celebrates to this day. |
There were several subsequent Titans books in the following years with varying levels of quality, but it largely became a revolving door of characters and creators. There was a resurgence of the type of storytelling that made the Titans great in the pages of an entirely separate book, Young Justice, a completely new team of brand-new teenage heroes. When Geoff Johns came on to create a new Teen Titans book of his own, he took a page from the classic Wolfman/Perez team and built something new using the members of Young Justice as his Titans, but also introduced the idea that some of the classic characters would also be on hand to serve as mentors to the young heroes. In grand Titans tradition, this lineup would slowly devolve over time as the lineup shifted and gave way to lesser characters, but Johns still managed to create a central cast of Titans that was just as strong as the one Wolfman & Perez had built. A new generation of Titans.
Ultimately, what makes these books work so well is watching the characters grow. When it's REALLY good, it's built around a core group of characters whose relationships you really care about, and the story follows them as those relationships evolve and change, and the characters mature before your eyes. This might also be the thing that makes the Titans such a weird challenge to adapt into the larger world of DC, because making these characters grow up means that EVERYONE should be growing up. DC wants it's marquee characters to be static; Batman or Superman can't really be depicted aging. This often leaves the classic Titans characters in a sort of limbo, too problematic to really be used but too awesome and popular to be ignored. |
Our Teen Titans StoryThere are several major story arcs and team lineups that truly define the Teen Titans. We've very carefully structured our timeline to make sure that each of these teams is front and center. There is a lot of content to draw from, and there are times when we had to struggle a little bit to get all of those stories to happen in a limited amount of time. These are supposed to be TEEN Titans after all, so these events really need to play out within a specific set of years of the characters lives.
There are quite a few other lineups of Teen Titans that have happened over the years with varying degrees of success, and we've used some of them as a basic framework for our other teams. We've created a version of the Titans West, the spinoff team from the Pre-Wolman/Perez years as a way to start moving them forward, but we also built a version of the Titans from the early 90's into our timeline when Roy's leads a team to hunt for Cheshire. Of course, our current lineup borrows heavily from the Titans rich history in animation, both from the actual Teen Titans series and in Young Justice. Both series created seminal new takes on the team and characters and their influence is felt through our entire timeline. |
The Future of The Teen TitansIf there's any one truth about the Titans, it's that their membership is always changing, because these characters are always growing. Our current team is made up of kids aged 17-19, and will very soon no longer qualify for the 'teen' part of Teen Titans. This means we need our timeline set up so that we can very soon bring in a whole new generation of Titans.
All the best Titans teams have been built around a central idea; to give the current Robin a supporting cast. The two best lineups were built around Dick Grayson and Tim Drake, and it's likely no accident that these were the two best received and longest lasting Robins. It's an easy call, then, that the next generation of Titans needs to be built around the newest Robin, Damian Wayne. We've tried to specifically build this team to give Damian a framework to explore the qualities that make him unique, and to help him grow into a hero all his own. Our take on Damien has only JUST arrived on the scene so it will still be about a year before this story arc unfolds. We'll be setting up all these characters so that this next chapter in the legacy of the Teen Titans will be a great one. |
