Suli
1164 - Suli is selected by Darkseid for his laboratories. They fall in love, and she bears his son Kalibak. She is poisoned by Desaad at the behest of Heggra.
Suli isn't really a character, in the strictest sense of the word. She was really just a twist reveal to impose drama onto the relationships of the New Gods. A LOT of relationships... not just between Orion and Kalibak, but also between Darkseid and Desaad. It was a really good idea, but the implications that come from that reveal just go MILES in revealing so much more about Darkseid and his history, you just can't help but want to dive deeper.
Suli's StoryThe Sorceress Suli didn't appear in the original Fourth World books. At the end of New Gods, as Orion and Kalibak have their final battle, Darkseid reveals to Desaad why he cares about the survival of both of them; just like Orion, Kalibak is ALSO his son. Desaad immediately realizes, this means that he's the son of the sorceress Suli, whom he'd poisoned for Darkseid's mother Heggra. She was finally depicted in flashback in the 1989 New Gods series, specifically the Bloodline Saga storyline.
What's really amazing here is that Darkseid was actually in love with Suli, and that Heggra had her poisoned because she was a threat to Darkseid's evolution into the despot he was destined to become. Darkseid underwent CHANGE, rather than being an absolute ideal. |
