The extended membership of the Green Lantern Corp comes from a few different sources, but interestingly, those same sources all seem to happen in cycles. There are characters introduced more or less as background characters who have a line here and there but who gain popularity because of some quirk of their design, there are characters introduced in their own standalone stories whose role may or may not expand over time but who remain popular because that original story was so clever, and there are characters that are actually introduced with the intention of playing a role in the main continuity Green Lantern story. These different character sources repeat through the various eras of Green Lantern Corp mythology, resulting in a pretty deep roster of potential characters for us to go over.
Shilandra is one of the characters that debuted within her own one-shot story, which is one of my favorite ways for these characters to be first imagined. She's had very few appearances afterward, and most of them are just as a background extra, but in building out our timeline we've found ourselves expanding her role quite a bit.

Shilandra Thane's Comic HistoryShilandra's introduction was in issue #1 one of my favorite series in the Green Lantern canon; 1992's Green Lantern Corps Quarterly. Each book of the series used a different narrative device to tell different one-shot original stories about new Green Lantern characters, and it's where we got a lot of the stranger members that would later populate the Corps. Her story was a parable against violence and nuclear war; she was chosen as a new Green Lantern among a plant torn apart by war and tried in vain to save her people before they destroyed themselves, but could only escape to join the Corp and hope to teach other worlds the lesson she failed to teach her own people.
Shilandra made a few small appearances after that story. As one of several rescued ex-Green Lanterns in Guy Gardner: Warrior, helping Kyle Rayner while he was in space as the sole Green Lantern, and as part of a murder mystery story that took place in the post Geoff Johns era. There are other small appearances here and there, but almost always as part of some larger group of Lanterns. |
Our Shilandra Thane StoryThe biggest thing we want from Shilandra is to include that original tale, because it really is a fantastic little parable to put into the mythology of the Green Lanterns. "And so does another world achieve ultimate fluency and expertise in it's tragically chosen art."... That's fantastic. We're expanding it a little bit, suggesting that she was at least able to save SOME of her people... but honestly, it's just gold.
We wound up adding a LOT to her story. The concept of the Mosaic world was something conceived to give John Stewart his own thing to do, but it's actually an interesting concept that really fits Shilandra's story. When we were looking for Lanterns that would serve well on the Honor Guard after the death of K'ryssma, Shilandra just seemed like the perfect choice. |
