Virgil Hawkins was very deliberately imagined by his creators as a young black teenager who came from a very traditional family, living with both parents and a sibling. The animated series altered that slightly, introducing the idea that he had lost his mother to gang violence, an idea that Dwayne McDuffie wasn't thrilled about, but that he did concede let them tell certain stories they couldn't have told otherwise. Still, his intention was clear, and our timeline will feature his whole family. We don't really have timelines to contribute for his parents, other than to just say that they are both there, and they are great.
His sister Sharon, on the other hand, does get at least a little bit involved with another one of Dakota's Bang Babies, so she does have enough of her own story going on that we thought she could get a timeline of her own.

Our Sharon Hawkins StoryIn Static's original comic his relationship with his sister was absolutely antagonistic, with her tormenting him as much as anything. She was also completely clueless about his secret identity, going so far as even being a bit of a Static fangirl. This changed in the animated series where Virgil and Sharon had lost their mom. She stepped up quite a bit, serving as a mother figure for their household, assigning household chores and doing a lot of the cooking (much to Virgil's chagrin). This relationship was still at least partially antagonistic, but it was also clear that the two of them ultimately did care for each other and would do anything for each other once it came to it.
This is the version of the character that was translated into the 2021 comic, where Sharon is now a medical student who does regular ridealongs with ambulances. While she still gives Virgil the business sometimes, it's really clear that there is a lot of affection between them, and that they all feel very supported and loved. This is essentially the version of Sharon we wanted to use, just because the moments between her and Virgil when she gives him the sort of tough-love he needs, or even helps him when talking to their parents, is a great addition to this classic character. |
