Mareena
4 years ago - Mareena is born, the daughter of Garth and Dolphin, delivered by Nuidis Vulko. She first meets Arthur Curry Jr.
We are making one pretty specific chage with the future Aquagirl, Mareena. It might actually seem to be a little random, but in practice we think this plays really nicely. It lets us use a very cool character we otherwise wouldn't have access to, and it also sets up a particular story that can one day play out in the future of our timeline.
Mareena's Animation & Comic HistoryWe should start here with the child of Tempest & Dolphin, who in comic canon is not a daughter, but a son named Cerdian. He was born in the year 2000 during Dan Jurgen's run on Aquaman, and also appeared several times in the concurrent Titans series, as Tempest was a member at the time. Unfortunately both Cerdian and his mother Dolphin were killed off-screen during the Infinite Crisis crossover, a part of the mid 2000s effort by DC to ensure no one ever experienced joy again.
In the meantime, In the same year that Cerdian was born in the comics the animated series Batman Beyond aired one of it's best episodes, "The Call". In it we got to meet the (unbelievably cool) new original take on a future version of the Justice League for the show's cool cyberpunk near-future. Among them was a new version of Aquagirl, Mareena. She was a white-haired Atlantean, and as we soon discover, she is the young daughter of the DCAU version of Aquaman, who at that point had only appeared in episodes of Superman the Animated Series, since the Justice League series was still about a year off. Mareena, like the rest of the future Justice League from Batman Beyond, would go on to appear several times in the extended DCAU, and would also make several appearances in the tie-in comics. |
Mareena's Story & Possible FutureMareena is a really fun, alternate take on Aquagirl, but what we really like about her is that she's a particularly adept execution onf the concept of a child of a modern hero growing up to be a hero in the future. We've very specifically setting up infant characters who can one day grow up and become the next generation of heroes, and she fits beautifully.
We do just have one small complication in that Aquaman already has a child, and it's his son, Arthur Jr. We could obviously have just made Mareena Arthur's little sister, but we think what we've done here actually has better dramatic potential for the future. If Tempest and (the notably white-haired) Dolphin have a daughter instead of a son, Mareena would be growing up in close proximity of the Atlantean royal family, but would have far more freedom and could easily one day follow in her dad's footsteps and become the new Aquagirl. |
