Lord Sardonyx is a function of some pretty basic D&D worldbuilding at play in Gemworld; you want to make sure there are a bunch of lower level lieutenants for the heroes to face before they actually meet the final boss. He is clearly built for that explicit purpose, but manages to be a solid bad guy in his own right.
Lord Sardonyx's Comic HistoryLord Sardonyx is actually the leader of the monsters who originally grab Amy Winson and bring her to Gemworld for Dark Opal. We come to find that he's the lord of House Sardonyx, one of the great houses of Gemworld, who has sword allegiance to Dark Opal in exchange for more power. They have a subtle Megatron / Starscream antagonism, but his allegance is so complete that, when Dark Opal makes a pact with the otherworldly Emissaries of Varn that must be sealed in blood and he commands Sardonyx to use HIS blood, he does so, setting him up to later be taken away when Dark Opal reneges on their agreement. Sardonyx manages to escape and return to Gemworld, where he then joins Amy and her allies, lending his magic to theirs to ultimately defeat the dark sorcerer. Sardonyx would, in the following ongoing series, almost immediately betray the other houses and ally himself with the next evil despot bent on dominating Gemworld, proving that you just can't keep a good minion down.

Our Lord Sardonyx StorySardonyx is actually a very colorful character in Gemworld, coming from a desert landscape with a vast city made up of spiring tent palaces. The fact that he is revealed to have horns when he's taken by the Emissaries of Varn is actually a really clever visual also, somehow making him seem more vulnerable and easier to empathize with.
For our purposes, of course, we're going to use him for exactly the same role the original comic did, making him Dark Opal's most trusted lieutenant, and even making him the one responsible for originally finding Amy and bringing her back to Gemworld. After he is betrayed by Dark Opal, we're also going to use the story beat of him clawing his way back into Gemworld where he briefly allies himself with Amy and her followers to help defeat Dark Opal, but given just how dark we wound up making the character, we found it more satisfying for him to meet his end during that final battle, letting him go out, at least, on the right side. |
