Lord Garnet's Comic HistoryFor the first several issues of Amethyst, Amy's two main mentors were Citrina and the monsterous Granch, but in issue 6, we can see the series make what looks like a very deliberate shift. For one thing, Amy finally undergoes several training montages, changing from a lost little girl in a beautiful princess's body to a capable hero with both weapons and magic. Perhaps more importantly, however, we saw both the tragic death of Granch at the hands of Dark Opal, and the introduction of an entirely new mentor in Lord Garnet, who had previously taught her father.
You could see the obvious utility of a more human mentor, as he could accompany Amy to events like the wedding in the very next issue that introduced a whole cast of new characters, but he also immediately endeared himself to both Amy and the readers by introducing her iconic pegasus Ypsilos. He would remain at her side for the rest of the series, while in the follow up ongoing series we would dive deeper into his backstory, and learn about the tragic loss of his son. |
Our Lord Garnet StoryIt is pretty wild that Amethyst has such an abundance of mentor figures, but they all do serve a very distinct purpose. Garnet teachers her to fight, but he also introduces her to the intrigue of the great houses. He's another example the greatr design language of Gemworld.
There is this classic interpretation of the hero's journey that puts a lot of focus on the death of a mentor figure, and its kind of interesting that over the course of several series Amethst loses both of her original mentors, but because Garnet was introduced later, he gets to stick around. we get to have him give away Amy at her wedding, and be the godfather of her daughter. His story isn't overly complicted, but including him does a great job of building out Amethyst's world in a really satisfying way. We also get to play with his backstory, including his son's heroic sacrifice in the past, which lets us introduce him later on as one of the friends of Amy's daughter Amaya. |
