For a very long time, the Legion loomed over this entire project like a sort of obelisk. Fifty plus years of dense history. Dozens, perhaps more than a hundred, team-members. *Five* separate continuity reboots. A history rife with time travel and pocket universes and exploitation of multiple continuity jumps. This was, by every possible metric, the single hardest piece of continuity rewriting we were ever going to try to do.
But lord, the more we got into this, the more we loved it. The Legion has always been it's own little corner of the DC universe, buffeted by the hurricane force winds of change that constantly swept through DC's continuity, but always surviving on it's own. It was written by people that really, really care about it. The original stories written way back in the pages of Superboy were crafted by a 14-year-old Jim Shooter, and it shows. There's a purity to the whimsy of the world of the Legion of Super-Heroes that simply will never be replicated.
The team changed over and over during the subsequent decades, but each new version managed to fuse the purity of the central concept with SPRAWLING space adventures. This was GREAT stuff. Sci-fi on an extremely advanced stage. It might have pushed away casual readers because it was SO different from everything else, but for people actually reading it you'd be hard pressed to find a better comic anywhere.
We've dug WAY deeper into the team and it's history than we imagined possible. It's layered with fantastic stories, and we used them to try to structure a timeline for the team that lets it really shine. The order of events might be a little different, but hopefully this will read like a hybrid of ALL the various versions of the team.
We've had to make some exclusions, obviously. The team lineup is SO big that we simply couldn't include everyone. For the most part we tried to include the most iconic, most beloved members of the Legion, and we think we've done so. Obviously every character had their fans, and if we left out your favorite member of the Legion... we can only apologize. Also we had to make one very particular shift in practically everyone's story; no one can ever get their powers simply by being a member of a species where EVERYONE has them. That's simply not narratively functional. A superhero HAS to be unique somehow. So for quite a few of these characters we've made a shift that explains their powers in a more traditional super-hero way. We've also peppered their origins with references to contemporary heroes; see if you can spot some of them.
Also, one element of the Legion that has ALWAYS been there is the fact that all the character names are just a tiny bit... cute? They were invented as young characters by a young writer in a more innocent time, and that's part of the DNA of the book. over the years there have been a lot of attempts to revamp the characters so they don't have such cute names and some of them have been more successful than others, but for the most part we decided not to bother. This is a millennia in the future, after all, who knows what sort of name is going to be cool? The fact that Cosmic Boy continues to go by that name even into his 30's just feels inherently correct in the world of the Legion, and we think it's best to embrace it.
This might be the biggest single chunk of work we've done so far for the project, and we are DYING to know what you think of it!
