26 years ago - 5-year-old Cyril's mother dies. His father Percival retires as Squire.
19 years ago - 12-year-old Cyril inspires his father Percival to become Knight.
17 years ago - 14-year-old Cyril becomes Squire to his father Percival 's Knight.
9 years ago - 22-year-old Cyril's father Percival dies, and he begins to lose himself to gambling & drink.
8 years ago - 23-year-old Cyril's life is saved by Beryl Hutchinson, who inspires him to create his own Knight identity. He trains her to become the new Squire.
4 years ago - 27-year-old Cyril & Beryl join the Global Guardians.
There were absolutely scads of spin off versions of Batman and Robin that showed up in the truely bizarre years of Batman comics. Even Superman and Jimmy Olsen got in on the gag, working together as Nightwing and Flamebird, patroling the streets of the bottled city of Kandor.
The thing that made Knight and Squire stand out among all the other pretenders is their occasional appearance alongside the Ultramarine Corp. We fanboy about Grant Morrison a lot, but when he was looking to flesh out the small team he built in the pages of JLA, he grabbed some obscure old Global Guardians, derelict Justice Leaguers, and what looked like a redesigned Knight and Squire. Knight and Squire were later elaborated on in JLA Classified, where they had the benefit of stellar design work by Ed McGuinness. Later they starred in their own intensely charming limited series that did wonders to solidify the mythos of the characters, who had at this point earned a solid place among Batman's legion of support characters. We've made sure to adhere fairly closely to the story as laid out in their fairly limited appearances, coming up short of Cyril's death and Beryl's subsequent turn as the third Knight. We've made sure to include the episode where the original Knight & Squire work alongside Batman and Robin, as Cryil's redesigned Knight costume is clearly modeled after Batman, and it doesn't make any sense to ignore that fact, but rather include it as part of his design. We've elaborated on Cyril's relationship with his father, making him a catalyst for Percival having become the Knight after his career as Shining Knight's Squire ended. |
