Besides Travis Morgan himself, Jennifer Morgan is probably the most commonly referenced element of Skartaris in the larger world of DC. She actually interacts with the outside world more often, appearing as one of the world's most prominent magic users. Within the story of Skartaris, Jennifer is a great example of the hard left-turn plot changes Grell was often aiming for. In this case, it even takes the book's admittedly problematic treatment of its female characters and turns it on its ear, taking one of the book's myriad damsels in need of saving and has her completely save herself. It's a lot of fun.
Jennifer's Comic HistoryJennifer appeared, kind of out of nowhere, fairly deep into Warlord's initial storylines in issue #38. While I'm fairly certain we'd never even had a reference to the idea that Travis had ever been married, let alone widowed, we are suddenly introduced to his daughter, who was still a child when he first disappeared but is now nineteen thanks to the weird relationship Skartaris has with time. Having chartered a ship to track down her missing father, the issue ends with her setting sail to return home, only for her to later crash, and be found by followers of Deimos. Morgan is told of the crash, leading to yet another world-spanning quest as he tries to find and save his daugther. Meanwhile, Jennifer is menaced by Deimos in her captivity, while the witch Ashiya attempts to exploit her surface world knowledge to learn more about the Atlantean technology...
But Jennifer, in the span of only a very few issues (everything in Skartaris happens FAST), actually learns to wield magic of her own, usurps Ashiya's role as Sorceress Supreme, and chooses to stay in Skartaris, claiming Castle Deimos as her own. For the rest of the series, Jennifer becomes one of her father's most powerful allies. It's a brilliant twist that I guarantee you didn't see coming. |
Our Jennifer StoryAs fantastic as the twist of Jennifer managing to save herself by becoming more powerful than her captors is, it unfortunately happens just about at the very end of the real must-read chapters of the Warlord series. This is in the issues between #50-60, followed by the Conspiracy story arc.... which is where we wrap up our version of the story of Skartaris. Jennifer is therefore relegated to primarily appear in the later chapters of the series, where she is unmistakably a core part of the lore, but unfortunately not lore we're specifically adapting. This includes the massive New Atlantean war, but also a very interesting period post-crisis when Power Girl was having her origins retold to make her a descendant of ancient Atlanteans, and to do so she actually became part of the cast of Skartaris for a time, during which she and Jennifer became... let's just say 'close'.
For our timeline, we are keeping as much of Jennifer's story as we can, and we'll just understand that as the timeline moves forward, she is in Castle Deimos, slowly growing in her mastery of the Mystic Arts. We're also updating the initial events bringing her to Skartaris in the first place, suggesting that she was magically summoned by Deimos thanks to her own latent magical sensitivity... and also using her journey into the Hollow Earth as a way to bring in Mariah as well, which gives us a chance to actually build a strong partnership and friendship between these two women who... I'm not certain ever actually met canonically? |
