This unfortunately-named character was actually originally created as a live-action television character, the second half of the Shazam!/Isis hour from 1975 to 1977. While Captain Marvel was obviously a previously known character from the comic Isis was completely original and actually very cool. A schoolteacher empowered by a magical egyptian amulet to weild the powers of the ancient goddess Isis. Those powers were no joke, either; she could fly, had super-strength, could control the weather, become intangible, control animals... it was a superpower free-for-all. This was really because the show wasn't meant to be establishing any sort of lasting character legacy, it was simply meant to teach you a lesson with every episode. Still, It's really hard to look at the history of female superheroes and not at least include a chapter on Isis, as she was very likely the single most powerful female superhero ever put on popular media.
The character remained a footnote in DC's history until she was brought foreward in the pages of the series 52 as Black Adam's consort, a part of a larger story expanding Black Adam's family and influence. |
Many of the characters built up during that story were meant to mimic the classic Marvel family, from his young sidekick Osiris to the Anthropomorphic Nile Alligator Sobek meant as a send-up of Captain Marvel's talking tiger character Tawkey-Tawney (classic Captain Marvel comics were weird.) All these characters came apart within the pages of 52, although most of them came back at one point or another, and do a pretty good job of needlessly complicating DC without really bringing anything to the table.
The exception, obviously, is Isis. She is a FANTASTIC character in the comic, and expands the mythos of Black Adam in a lot of really interesting ways while also being a great hero in her how right. The idea that she is empowered by the same magic as Black Adam does a wonderful job of establishing exactly who she is and her place in the world, but by giving those powers to someone that is so selflessly heroic makes Adam a better character as well. The expansion of Kahndaq as a world power within the story of Black Adam is one of the more interesting modern additions to DC's mythology, and the fact that we get an awesome character like Isis out of it is very much one of the best parts of it. |
