There are so many ice-themed bad guys in DC that they've actually teamed up more than once. Icicle might actually be one of the more obscure examples, but that could be because for a lot of his appearances he's basically just a carbon copy of the much more popular Captain Cold. The exceptions to this are actually appearances of the second Icicle, or Icicle Jr, as he's sometimes called. This is the character we're basing our take around.
Icicle's Comic HistoryIcicle appeared for the first time in All-American Comics, one of the weird, innovative enemies invented for Alan Scott's Green Lantern. He was a European scientist who invented a cold gun, and who used it to terrorize high society and stage elaborate heists. It's important to remember that this was in 1947, a full ten years before Leonard Snart debuted as a Barry Allen Flash enemy in the Silver Age, so while he looks very redundant to modern readers, this is very decidedly a Hydrox-before-Oreos situation.
Icicle made a few more appearances as a Green Lantern enemy before he became a long-standing member of the Injustice Society. The fact that he bore such a huge resemblance to Captain Cold probably kept him from ever evolving much beyond his original appearance. He was killed in the Crisis of Infinite Earths, and soon we met his son Cameron, or Icicle Jr, in the pages of Infinity Inc as part of the newly redesigned Injustice Society. Cameron had managed to inherit a biological version of his father's technological powers and remained a regular part of the Society even as it evolved in the Geoff Johns years, where he became the father of Artemis Crock's child. |
Our Icicle StoryWe're not going to try to explain why Captain Cold has a virtual doppelganger running around, so we're not going to use the idea that the original Icicle uses a cold gun. In fact, we're not going with an original Icicle at all... We don't actually need this to be a legacy character, so we're just going to go with the modern version of the character, albeit with a completely original origin. We decided to make his powers magical, and in doing so, there's one very clear origin available; he can come from the same lost tribe of homo-magi Norsemen as Tora Olafsdatter. In fact, we're going to go one step bigger to explain his far more potent ice-manipulation powers, but making him the son of an Ice-Giant. We're also going with a story where he killed his romantic rival for Tora, just to give that relationship a little intrigue.
Beyond that, we're focusing his story entirely on his relationship with Artemis. The comic actually managed to make their relationship relatively healthy, but we're looking to mirror Artemis's relationship with her father, so we're going to keep Icicle a dangerous influence that she has to shed to come out a better person. |
