The Furies are a pretty big presence in DC, they are regularly brought in to challenge characters all across the spectrum. The original members of the Furies are almost always front and center, but there are often other members of varying degrees of originality that will also be included. Of all of these, I believe Gilotina has managed to break through and become one of the most regularly appearing new Furies, and has really seemed to find her niche within the team.
Gilotina's StoryGilotina is not a founding Fury. While a lot of new Furies have been invented over the years. one group of them in particular actually stands out as another creator deliberately trying to do something in the spirit of Kirby's original invention. Karl Kessel created his own new team of Furies in 1991 in Hawk & Dove #21, and actually shared his inspiration for these characters in a Facebook post in 2015. His character Gilotina is essentially an original creation, but it does take the name from one of the army of Furies who joins Barda's rebellion in Mister Miracle #8 and who had a few panels devoted to her. Kessel's Gilotina would go on to appear in a few more places, most notably in Kessel's own Guardians of Metropolis miniseries.
I believe the turning point in Gilotina's inclusion in the regular Female Furies happened in the pages of the Superman/Batman in 2004, in one of the highest profiles stories happening at the time; when Jeph Loeb and superstar artist Michael Turner introduced a new version of Supergirl. The Furies played a big part in this story, and Gilotina was essentially upgraded to the role of team leader, basically filling the role once filled by Barda herself. The Furies show up a lot, so I can't really say how consistently she's a part of the core group, but you do regularly see her included, and as a straight up sword-wielding warrior and brainwashed devotee, she does fit into the group exceptionally well. We've introduced her to the Furies after Barda's desertion, giving the team a new stabilizing leader to center around, rather than populating the group with a bunch of scheming backstabbers. |
