Major Crimes Unit
This is an interesting team page to make, because it's obviously not a superhero team at all. Many of these characters have played leading roles in stories of their own, some of them even leading their own COMICS. Some of them, at least in regular comic canon, have gone on to become superheroes elsewhere. Universally, though, we've actually rejected that, because they are ALL way more interesting here.
The GCPD's StoryThere are obviously police departments in EVERY fictional comic book city, from Metropolis to Star City, so why does Gotham and the GCPD get special consideration? There are two answers. The first is that Batman has worked hand in hand with the Gotham police from his very first appearance, where Commissioner Gordon was his very first supporting character, before he had a love interest or a sidekick or a butler. The second is the work of Greg Rucka & Ed Brubaker. Rucka really built up the world of the Gotham City Police Department over his time writing Detective Comics, making the whole thing feel more like a crime drama, and then worked with Brubaker to create Gotham Central, the Eisner winning series that cemented the GCPD as the hub of some of the best cop thrillers in comics.
So as we adapt these characters to our timeline, there really is no way we can do so without particularly singling out the GCPD and the huge role it plays in the world of DC. |
