Gavinski's Odditorium
I've finally met Gav now that he's joined the discord, but I was seeing the ripples of his presence for a long time before that. He is a voracious commenter, sometimes steamrolling me with DOZENS of comments that were multiple paragraphs at a time. The guy is just super enthusiastic about his interests... which I think we can all relate to, right?
What I did eventually discover, and I hope it's okay to share this, Gav, is that he's actually one of the youngest readers I've interacted with. Gav is, currently, 16, which makes him VERY Gen Alpha, and speaking as someone who is very Gen X, I find myself constantly examining Gav's enthusiasms through that lens. He just clearly loves things that are actively, willfully absurd. He has advocated so hard, and for so long, for me to include Terra-Man, but when he presents his case the specific thing that seems to draw him in is just a particular affinity for his VIBE... which is almost the absolute opposite of what I need to include him.
I've just been so fully fascinated by the way Gav approaches the characters he likes, that I asked him to make this; his Odditorium. An examination of some of the oddball characters he loves. I really hope you all can see exactly why I find him so much fun and I'm so glad I've finally managed to find the source of this great, weird energy.

Dr Domino - Master Of Deceiving
Looks this guy SEEMS like one of those classic villains who appear just so the writer can make fun of them so they can get a spot on a "top ten worst villains" article on screen rant. here's the ACTUAL best thing about him, THE DOMINO HEAD HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HIM. he's not some mad scientist who's holding New York ransom with like a giant Domino that will crush him, no, he's just some guy leading an army who want to know how to make a bacteria cloudburst. that's it, no one even mentions his Domino head, its never described besides his name. screw "who is Red X" what in the actual HELL is this dudes deal? is this like a Chairface Chippendale thing where he was born with a object for a head, and he's so desperate to be respected that he's willing to make a terrorist attack? was he once an ordinary Domino accidentally given life by Circe, and all these big grand attacks are just so he can get his mother to notice him? did the artist get so bored that he decided to change some generic general villain into a silly Saturday morning cartoon villain for fun?.....probably that but hey a man can dream, can't he? |
Orca/The Caviler II - The Fallen Heroes
I put these two in the same section because of their similarities, being Batman villains and having the same type of origin. wanting to be heroes, but instead got pushed to the dark side in one way or another. (in Orcas case, getting mortally wounded forced her to take her orca serum full time, while caviler started commiting crimes to keep a woman he liked safe) It's a shame Hudson, the Caviler never appears much, he had a decent story illustrated by Tim sale himself, yet somehow the silly 40s version appears more them him. but thankfully Orca at least has carved a niche as a upper c level batman villain, and has a shocking amount of new stories shes in. good for her! |
Scimatar - The Thug Who Did The Impossible
Oh, I'm sorry, this guys is a MARVEL villain!.....well apparently not to some cw writer, because this guy somehow got into the ARROW SHOW. the dude in a interview described him as "a big DC villain", and this whole thing is the funniest $#*^ i've ever seen. hell, I couldn't blame him for making this mistake, scimatar is an IRON FIST villain! yeah, iron fist has villains other then Steel Serpent. |
Terra-Man - The Man Of Yesteryear
last but CERTAINLY not least, Tobias Mannings is somehow I hope gets into this very project someday. thank you for comic book twitter for bringing this guy to my attention. like, really, a space cowboy who's origin contrast superman's (an alien sent to earth as the man of tomorrow, a human abducted from earth as the man of yesteryear). however, besides the goofy charm of this dude, a fellow on twitter called "Duke Doom Comics" or @Profofevil, gave a really good summary of this guy that fully brought me to the cause. here, check it out. "Western bandit in space. Born on earth, raised in space. Flies a space steed. Has alien weapons. "The Man with No Name" who robs from Stardestroyers and alien military bases. Deadliest shot in the universe." "He sees Superman as the ultimate lawman worthy of being taken down, defeated, and killed. And refuses to stop. A western legend who outlived everyone he ever known. Killed those closest to him. Lives for the thrill of the game. And for nothing else. He's making his legend." "He's playing for keeps. And he does it all, because it's the only thing he has left. He's the lone cowboy. Ride on, Aim True, TERRA-MAN!" |
