The 1987 Giffen / Newell miniseries returned to Gemworld many years later, allowing us to see a world where Amethyst was now a legend of the past. Part of how this was established was to introduce Donal, one of the sons of the heroes of the original series. He was clearly poised to be hero of his own story, although the miniseries didn't quite wind up working that way.
Donal's StoryIn the series, we learn that Topaz & Turquoise have raised two sons, Donal & Wrynn. While Donal was a loving, happy young man, Wrynn was melancholy & spiteful. As the series continues, Wrynn succums to the influence of the Lords of Chaos, becoming Gemworld's newest enemy Lord Mordru. Donal, for his part, joins his father in trying to stop his brother and save the people of his house, but he is tragically killed.
We're not specifically adapting the events of the 87 series, but will be introducing Amy's daughter, Amaya, and wanted to give her some friends of her own. Donal, as he is presented in this series, is a young hero in his own right. While he can't, in our timeline, be the son of Topaz & Turquoise, we really liked the idea that he is instead her adopted son and ward. This actually explains why he doesn't fit the usual naming convention of the royal houses, and sets him up to be Amaya's best friend in Gemworld, and that just works really well. |
