The Darkstars are kind of a particular moment in DC's continuity, but it was a particularly competent moment, growing out of a particular narrative need rather than an editorial one. An alternative spacefaring peacekeeping force, it's something that's actually been tried a few times since then but I'd argue hasn't ever really been done quite so cleanly. We're not putting a ton of time into establishing a whole organization of Darkstars, but are instead using them as the history for just one character... who winds up being a pretty awesome inclusion in our project in the process.
The Darkstar's Comic HistoryFerrin Colos and the Darkstars debuted in their own series in 1992. It was a new series featuring a new spacefaring police force similar to the Green Lanterns, who were in a bit of a rebuilding period at the time, allowing these new characters to step up. Ferrin Colos was the main character of the original series, stationed on Earth where he deputizes certain humans to wear their own Exo-Mantle suits as his deputies. It's a fairly by the book new comic series, but it's competent enough. They were featured in a crossover with Green Lantern and L.E.G.I.O.N., establishing that they were the three big players in DC's cosmic world at the time.
The role of the Darkstars got way more interesting a few years later, in 1994, when the Lantern Corp was completely decimated by Hal Jordan in the aftermath of the destruction of Coast City. Suddenly they were the only game in town, and you started to see them much more often. Several former Green Lanterns joined their ranks, including Galius Zed, G'nort, K'ryssma, Medphyll, Tomar Tu, and even John Stewart. Arguably their biggest get, however, was Donna Troy. Throughout her appearances in Kyle Rayner's Green Lantern series... this is her superhero identity. She's a Darkstar. Ultimately, their ranks were widely decimated during a giant battle in the pages of Green Lateran, but for a time there were a hugely important part of the larger spacefaring world of DC. |
Our Darkstar StoryWe are largely keeping the Darkstars much as they are; an interplanetary police force built by the Controllers. Their origin is simplified quite a bit... we've taken the evil regime of the Omega Men series and made them more of just a benign (probably corrupt) intergalactic federation, and the Darkstars are their agents, ostensibly working as heroes to help the citizens of the Citadel, but truthfully serving the interests of the government.
In this enviornment, we've zeroed in on the original Darkstar, Ferrin Colos. His story in the original comics featured him often questioning why he does what he does, the morality of the Darkstars and if he is truly making the difference in the galaxy that he wishes to make. We're creating a story where he in fact discovers that the Darkstars are corrupt and working to bring the organization down, earning himself a court-martial and imprisonment in the Starlog... where he first meets Vril Dox. This means Ferrin Colos, now the lone Darkstar in the galaxy, can be a founding member of our reimagined Omega Men. He's kind of perfect for the role.. a tough, powerful fighter with lots of experience and a strong moral core. He'll fit in with this band of miscreants perfectly. (Also... unrelated... but I think he should have a mustache.) |
