3 years ago - 19-year-old Chloe Carson's mother Eileen Carson is diagnosed with a terminal illness and passes within three months. Her relationships with her father Cave Carson becomes more strained.
2 years ago - 20-year-old Chloe Carson escapes an attempted kidnapping by agents of E. Borsten & Sons (Now EBX). Her father Cave Carson reveals that her mother was Princess Mazra Mazra P'Thrall of Strata, and that EBX is attempting to breach a vault only accessible by members of the Strata royal family. They steal the Mighty Mole and venture into Strata to save her grandparents. Upon returning her unremarkable boyfriend Daniel tries to confront her. She cannot elaborate on her reaction, but it contributed to her no longer attending that college. She and her dad start an educational podcast together.
Cave Carson is a pretty classic DC property, something that has been around forever, but almost always as a reference to the past rather than something new. This changed very recently with a whole new series that also introduced a modern take on Cave's life. In doing so, it also introduced us to Chloe Carson. I am really excited to explain to you guys exactly why Chloe is so great, and why she works so well in out project.

Chloe Carson's Comic HistoryChloe showed up for the first time, and has largely ONLY appeared, in the 2016 book from Gerald Way's Young Animals imprint Cave Carson has a Cybernetic Eye by Way, Jon Rivera, and Michael Avon Oeming. There's a lot of groundwork laid, so it's hard to describe without just describing the book verbatim, but essentially Chloe is Cave's daughter, and her mother was Eileen Carson, Cave's wife who is also the Princess of an underground kingdom. When we meet Chloe she's dealing with the death of her mother. She's a film student and feels like a remarkably real person with a complex relationship with her parents, so much so that a lot of the narrative work the book does comes from exploring that dynamic. She's sassy, irreverent, tough, and delightfully imperfect.
Cybernetic Eye did get a follow-up series, Cave Carson has an Intergalactic Eye, where we see a lot of cool growth for Chloe as she continues to work with her father, but also very much has a complex inner life and journey all her own. |
Our Chloe Carson StoryIt's honestly a really normal thing by now to take your classic comic heroes and just introduce their kid as a way to continue the legacy. You see it all the time, with varying degrees of setup and varying degrees of success. What really makes Chloe standout in things crowd is two really fun qualities: First, she's not just a flawed character, but she's flawed specifically like the hero of a classic adventure novel. She feels like someone meant to carry a franchise, but still at the very beginning of her arc when she's still coming into her own. Second, she isn't limited to JUST being Cave's daughter. They built a whole new legacy for her to also be a part of through her mother, and the combination of both legacies makes her so much more than just one more legacy.
We built our inclusion of Cave and Chloe specifically so that we can make sure the timing for Chole's introduction is just right. We made a tiny update, changing her underground civilization from Muldroog to Strata, Atlee's underground kingdom, just because it just worked better for us for there to only be one such place. Chloe is still pretty young, still working with her Dad, but there's just such a clear sense that this character is going to show up in a big way in the future. |
