Brimstone
1167 - Brimstone is created by Desaad, a seed of artificially sentient super heated hydrogen plasma animated with magnetic fields that believes it is a fallen angel. Darkseid unleashes Brimstone on battlefields against New Genesis.
1752 - Brimstone is deactivated as part of the non-aggression pact between Apokolips and New Genesis.
4 years ago - Brimstone is activated by Darkseid on Apokolips as the opponent Scott Free & Big Barda must face to earn their freedom. Scott uses a series of lasers to disrupt Brimstone's magnetic field so Barda can destroy the techno seed within.
We're trying to be very deliberate in keeping the Fourth World more or less restricted to the higher plane of the New Gods, and not have them interact with Earth that much unless their specific stories require it. There are a ton of stories that use the Fourth World as a source for the various threats that comic book characters need to function, and while we are working not to do that too often, characters like Brimstone are simple enough that we can transpose him back into the Fourth World story without much trouble, where I'd argue he has a much better role to play.
Brimstone's StoryBrimstone is a giant fire monster that believes he is a fallen angel of an avenging god. He was introduced in the miniseries Legend, which was basically a sequel to the original Crisis used to set up several of the new series that followed, including Ostrander's Suicide Squad and the Giffen Justice League. They needed a giant threat to defeat, and it's hard to do better than a fire kaiju. Brimstone regularly gets used as a sort of generic threat that turns up in various stories whenever they need something huge and threatening, usually treated as more of an earthborn threat and ignoring his history as a creation of Apokolips.
We're essentially doing the same thing with Brimstone, but we're being more Fourth World focused with him. He's a physical manifestation of the increased violence between New Genesis and Apokolips, turning what was more a feud fought with single encounters and duels into a war fought with giant walking weapons of mass destruction. We also get to use him as the impossible opponent when Mister Miracle and Barda try to win their freedom. He needs to feel absolutely undefeatable, making it all that much cooler when the defeat him. |
