The extended membership of the Green Lantern Corp comes from a few different sources, but interestingly, those same sources all seem to happen in cycles. There are characters introduced more or less as background characters who have a line here and there but who gain popularity because of some quirk of their design, there are characters introduced in their own standalone stories whose role may or may not expand over time but who remain popular because that original story was so clever, and there are characters that are actually introduced with the intention of playing a role in the main continuity Green Lantern story. These different character sources repeat through the various eras of Green Lantern Corp mythology, resulting in a pretty deep roster of potential characters for us to go over.
Brik's addition to the lineup of Green Lanterns happened in a period of transition. She clearly was added with the intention of giving her a larger and longer-lasting role, although I'm not sure that she ever really achieved it. Still, she's a long-standing part of the Lantern mythology, so we're absolutely including her.

Brik's StoryThe new Green Lantern series of 1990 began with Hal Jordan rebuilding the Green Lantern Corps. He was absent from the central plot for a bit, but in issue # 12 he returned with the first recruits for the new Corp. They included long-time veterans dating all the way back to the earliest issues of Green Lantern, Chaselon & Larvox, but also a completely new character, Brik. She was from Dryad, the same planet as the character Blok, a member of the Legion of Superheroes that was introduced in 1979. Just like her predecessor (from the future, because comics), Brik was from a silica-based species, essentially living stone. We came to learn that Hal basically introduced her to the concept of movement, opening up the galaxy to her, leaving her unwaveringly loyal to him, while also harboring a quiet lingering love for him that was destined to remain unanswered, since he was oblivious to her. It wasn't really a great look for Hal.
Brik would continue to appear as a member of the Green Lantern Corp from there on, although her role would basically diminish over time, making her more or less a background character. We wanted to use her, but since our timeline isn't including an earlier decline of the Corp for Hal to rebuild from, we're instead bringing her in as a new recruit after the attack by Legion. Whether or not she harbors a crush on Hal... I mean it could happen, theoretically, but it really shouldn't be her defining characteristic; instead she should be a strong, talented, and reliable member of the Corp. |
