Apros
1834 - Apros is spawned.
1859 -25-year-old Apros introduces the idea of a library to his people, bringing them into a new era of learning.
The extended membership of the Green Lantern Corp comes from a few different sources, but interestingly, those same sources all seem to happen in cycles. There are characters introduced more or less as background characters who have a line here and there but who gain popularity because of some quirk of their design, there are characters introduced in their own standalone stories whose role may or may not expand over time but who remain popular because that original story was so clever, and there are characters that are actually introduced with the intention of playing a role in the main continuity Green Lantern story. These different character sources repeat through the various eras of Green Lantern Corp mythology, resulting in a pretty deep roster of potential characters for us to go over.
Apros was introduced for a very specific role in the Corps story, and while that role does a good job of giving Apros a part to play, the really memorable element at play has to be his extremely weird design. He's alternately been more jellyfish or jello mold, but either way he's one of the best purely alien characters in the Corp.

Apros's StoryApros first appeared in one of the most important issues in the broader telling of the Green Lantern story; Tales of the Green Lantern Corp #1 from 1981. It's one of the first truly huge Green Lantern crossover stories, featuring all surviving Lantern characters coming together against Krona. It also introduces the Green Lantern Honor Guard, featuring Hal Jordan's longtime friend Tomar-Re, the severe K'ryssma, who would go on to challenge Hal for years... and Apros.
Apros was never a character, exactly, as much as he (they?) was (were?) a position holder in the Honor Guard. When Hal ran afoul of the Honor Guard, obviously Tomar would be on his side, and K'ryssma would be outspokenly against him... Apros's role would be to sway the Honor Guard in whatever direction the story required. Perhaps more to the point, however... Apros' job was to be a weird fungus/jellyfish alien in a position of authority and make the whole thing seem weird as hell. We're making Apros an extremely long-serving member of the Corp, giving him real weight and seniority. We even made him a contemporary and training partner to the legendary Abin Sur. |
